For Stephen F. Austin, even with a spot in the STATS FCS Top 25 potentially at stake, this is the definition of a trap game.Last week, the Lumberjacks went on the road and upset McNeese, one of two ranked teams in the Southland Conference. The other awaits them next week, facing No. 2 Sam Houston State and doing so on the grand stage of NRG Stadium -- home of the Houston Texans. In between is Saturday nights matchup with Abilene Christian, which heads into Homer Bryce Stadium at 0-3.Certainly their record is nowhere close to reflecting the quality of team that they are, Stephen F. Austin coach Clint Conque said.Thats not just coach speak. Abilene Christian has beaten the Lumberjacks each of the past two years.Additionally, Conque mentioned how the Wildcats had moments where they looked just fantastic in a 37-21 season-opening loss at Air Force, an FBS bowl team the last two seasons. Abilene has followed with a pair of three-point losses, blowing a fourth-quarter lead against Northern Colorado before falling in overtime at Houston Baptist last Saturday.I think at times weve got some big-time weapons, said Wildcats coach Ken Collums, previously Conques offensive coordinator at Central Arkansas. ... Weve got some guns, but sometimes were out of bullets or not firing it properly. One of those weapons is DeAndre Brown, but the teams top rusher from the past two seasons has been hobbled by an ankle injury. Hes carried the ball just six times for 15 yards and had to sit out last weeks loss, but Collums is hopeful the all-Southland honorable mention will be back this week. The timing of his potential return would add to the intrigue because Brown has been the difference in the last two meetings with SFA. In last years 35-32 victory, he ran 16 times for 132 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning 20-yarder with 5:59 to play. His career high of 256 rushing yards along with three TDs came in a 37-35 victory at Homer Bryce in 2014.At least the last two years weve matched up well against SFA, Collums said. Whether we do this year, I dont know. His team is familiar with matching up against the Conques, the coach and his son, quarterback Zach Conque. Hes totaled more than 500 yards passing and 200 rushing over the past two meetings, accounting for seven touchdowns. The younger Conque is the reigning Southland offensive player of the week after throwing for 262 yards and two TDs while rushing for 63 yards and a score in the 31-28 stunner at McNeese, which was ranked 14th.Yet, in a strange twist, he wasnt the one who led the game-winning drive. That was former walk-on Hunter Taylor, who hadnt thrown a pass all day until being sent on the field with SFA trailing 28-24 with five minutes to go. He proceeded to drive the Lumberjacks for the go-ahead score, a 4-yard pass to freshman Tamrick Pace. The switch wasnt due to an injury or anything like that. Zach Conque later returned to the field and helped run out the clock.I was mad at him for missing a double-cut, wide-open receiver, woulda given us the lead in the series before, the elder Conque explained. Just a gut feeling. We had made the decision after that previous series, well I made the decision actually. ... I just felt like we needed a shot of adrenalin right there, and Hunter responded. There should be only one man under center for Abilene. Thats emerging sophomore Dallas Sealey, whose passing yardage total has gone up every week. Hes topped 300 each of the past two games while doing major damage on the ground with 163 yards and five TDs.Sealey wasnt the starter for last years matchup with SFA, a level of unfamiliarity which could be another potential road block on the Lumberjacks possible path into the rankings. Last weeks upset of McNeese in Lake Charles, Louisiana, garnered them the fourth-most votes (162) of any team not to make this weeks STATS FCS Top 25.I know this, you dont go to Lake Charles on a Saturday night and beat the Cowboys. I mean, very rarely do people do that, Collums said. And the Lumberjacks went down there and did it, and played a great game. It wasnt perfect, but man, theyre competitors. Youth Johnny Townsend Jersey . - Connor McDavid scored 53 seconds into overtime as the Erie Otters came from behind to defeat the visiting Guelph Storm 4-3 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action. The most horrifying sight in baseball is to see a batter get hit in the head with a pitch or a pitcher get struck in the head by a line drive. Earlier this week at Tropicana Field, Blue Jays lefty J.A Happ could have had his career, if not his life, ended by a line shot up the middle by the Rays Desmond Jennings that struck him in the skull near his left ear. Happ was fortunate to escape with a small fracture behind his left ear, a lacerated ear, and an injury to his right knee, from the awkward way he fell when nailed by the ball. Happ is estimated to be out anywhere from 3-6 weeks. Even close calls like this can be career-altering. Reliever Rob Dibble, one of the Nasty Boys World Series-winning bullpen of the Cincinnati Reds in 1990, remembered facing Hall of Famer Eddie Murray, then with Cleveland, in a game a few years later. Murray hit a screaming liner up the middle and by some miracle, Dibble got his glove up and caught the ball at the last second. Dibble said that incident changed him. He claimed to never fully trust his stuff again after that and was never quite the same pitcher, ultimately out of the game a couple of years later. The most frightening and gruesome incident I ever saw occurred on September 8th, 2000. Ryan Thompson of the Yankees hit one back through the box and it struck Red Sox reliever Bryce Florie square in the face. He simply had no time to react. Sport Science estimated the ball was travelling at 120 miles per hour and hit Florie with a force of 5,500 pounds. Florie suffered several facial fractures and partial vision loss in his right eye. There was blood everywhere. Believe it or not, Florie actually briefly made it back to the Majors the following year, but quickly left the game as a player thereafter. Baseball took a long time to develop protection for batters and even the coaches manning the bases. Ray Chapman, the star shortstop of the 1920 Cleveland Indians, is still the only Major League player to die from an on-field incident. He was struck on the side of the head by a pitcher from the Yankees sidearm hurler Carl Mays on August 16th, 1920 and died 12 hours later in hospital. Though various players experiimented with head protection over the years, the first true well-marketed batting helmet wasnt produced until 1952.dddddddddddd Oddly enough, the man responsible was the same man who brought Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Branch Rickey was the general manager of Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952 and commissioned one of his front office team, Charlie Muse to come up with something that would offer protection to the players when they stepped up to the plate. Muse obliged and Rickeys own outfit, the American Cap Company, would market these helmets. But it wasnt until 1971 that helmets became mandatory and even then, there was a grandfathering rule that gave veteran players the right to choose whether to wear them or not for the remainder of their careers. The last player not to wear a helmet was former Red Sox catcher and later broadcaster Bob Montgomery, who played until 1979. Montgomery also spent some time in Toronto catching for the old Maple Leafs of the International League, then a Boston affiliate. Even the helmet with at least one earflap wasnt made manditory until 1983. The point is baseball moves slowly. Efforts are being made to develop some sort of padding that could at least be fitted into a pitchers cap to protect the skull to a degree. But I doubt well ever see the day a pitcher wears the type of helmet a batter does. Pitchers maintain it would be too cumbersome, too uncomfortable and would affect their performance. I can guarantee well never see the day when a pitcher wears a full facial shield or mask but a cap insert is an important and necessary step to give pitchers some semblence of protection and a chance to at least escape more serious injury in baseballs most frightening and dangerous plays. Numbers Game Last season , the Baltimore Orioles made their season with their record in one run games (29-9) and extra inning contests (16-2). Already this season, the Blue Jays are 4-8 in one run games and 1-3 in extras, not to mention 6-14 against their own division, including 3-10 against the the Yankees and Red Sox. That does not bode well, especially with the starting rotation ravaged by injuries.
