A fierce debate surrounding the future of Australia Day has arisen in the past 12 months, but has escalated recently after two Australian local councils announced they would no longer hold citizenship ceremonies on Jan. 26 out of respect to the wishes of Indigenous Australians.


Jan. 26 is a controversial date in Australia. It is known as the day when British colonist Captain James Cook first stepped foot on Australian soil at Botany Bay and hence many Indigenous Australians call it "Invasion Day," signifying the beginning of the "invasion" of white people and the eventual slaughter and mistreatment of their ancestors.


But despite a vocal liberal push to "change the date," results of the Essential poll, published in Guardian Australia on Tuesday#8# showed that 54 percent of Australians were content with Australia Day falling on Jan. 26, with 38 percent of those "strongly" opposed to change.


Additionally, 70 percent of the 1,784 respondents believed that everyone can celebrate Australia Day on Jan. 26 while just 18 percent said that everyone cannot.


Left-wing Greens voters were most in favor of changing the date (42 percent), while those with a university education (25 percent) were also in favor of finding a new date.


Meanwhile concerns regarding the inscription of nationally-significant statues were also raised in the poll. Last week it was revealed that some groups were upset with misleading inscriptions on statues of significant Australians, with some requesting they should be edited to reflect their true history -- good and bad.


Despite the vocal concerns#9# only 29 percent of respondents approved changing the inscriptions, while 42 percent were against.
