David Burgner, lead author of the study, said that the findingscontradicted a concerted effort within the medical industry toreduce antibiotic intake.

Though researchers could not determine what percentage of theprescriptions were justified, they did find that at least 20percent of the prescriptions were for viral infections whichantibiotics have no effect on.

Burgner said that providing better education for parents andmedical practitioners was key in reducing the number of antibioticstaken by infants.
