WELLINGTON, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- An international report showing New Zealand has one of the fastest rising rates of inequality among developed nations is an embarrassment for a government wedded to "trickle down" ideology, opposition parties claimed Wednesday.
The Organization for Economic Development and Co-operation ( OECD) report said that rising inequality had knocked more than 10 percentage points of New Zealand's economic growth from 1990 to 2010.
The Gini coefficient measure of income inequality rose in 16 out of the 21 OECD countries that had long-time statistics, rising by more than five points in Finland, Israel, New Zealand, Sweden and the United States, according to the OECD Focus on Inequality and Growth report.
The report showed that the government needed to stop clinging to failed "trickle down" economics, the main opposition Labor Party said.
"The government should be embarrassed by this report. It shows New Zealand has the widest growth in the gap between the haves and the have-nots in the developed world," Labor leader Andrew Little said in a statement.
Increasing the minimum wage and restoring collective bargaining rights, which critics claim the government has undermined, would make a real difference to ensuring the whole country was better off, he said.
The opposition Green Party said the OECD report showed the fundamental philosophy of the New Zealand governments over the past 30 years has been wrong.
"New Zealand was singled out for being the world's most extreme disciple of the trickle down cult which has caused the severest damage to both our people and our economy," Green Party co-leader Russel Norman said in a statement.
"The evidence has been staring us in the face for decades. Thirty years of trickledown obsession has seen the rate of child poverty double and the bottom half of incomes stagnate while those at the top get more and more wealthy," said Norman.
While the report argued that well-targeted redistribution policies could help lower inequality and improve overall economic growth, Finance Minister Bill English refuted the argument, saying half of all New Zealand households pay no net tax at all.
"In an economy that's not growing -- as New Zealand grew poorly for quite a stretch up until about the early 1990s -- in an economy growing poorly everyone gets worse off and the people at the bottom are affected the most," English told Radio New Zealand.
English said the government's education programs would help break the cycle of long-term poverty.
The funeral of MP Jo Cox, whose murder shocked Britain in the run-up to last month's EU referendum, was being held on Friday in the northern English constituency she represented.
Cox, a 41-year-old mother of two young children, was shot and stabbed in the street in the village of Birstall, West Yorkshire, on June 16 as she made her way to an advice session for the people she represented in parliament.
The slaying of the opposition Labour Party lawmaker a little over a year after she was elected, horrified politicians and the public, and overshadowed the final days of referendum campaigning.
Cox, who was an ardent supporter of Britain remaining in Europe, had campaigned for Syrian refugees and had praised the positive impact immigration had had on her constituency, Batley and Spen, a semi-rural area near the city of Leeds.
Her husband Brendan Cox said on Twitter before the private service he was "thinking of all victims of hatred today".
"Jo would ask us not to fight hate with hate but draw together to drain the swamp that extremism breeds in," he said.
A 52-year-old local man, Thomas Mair, has been charged with Cox's murder and will go on trial in November.
MANILA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- A Philippine columnist on Saturday called on the incoming Philippine government to drop a defense pact between the Philippines and the United States, arguing it was reducing the country into one big U.S. military base.
"For as long as we have foreign military bases on our soil, the country can never formulate its own independent foreign policy," Rod Kapunan wrote in an article published on Saturday, calling the foreign policy of outgoing Benigno Aquino's government "a carbon copy of the U.S. policy for the Asia-Pacific region."
Manila and Washington signed the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement in 2014, which allows the U.S. troops to build facilities to store equipment in the Philippines, in addition to giving broad access to Philippine military bases.
"As a lawyer, (incoming President Rodrigo) Duterte could see the implication in allowing the reinstallation of the U.S. bases," Kapunan wrote in an English newspaper the Standard.
He called on Duterte to drop the defense pact, which he said would be used as an example by future administrations to sign agreements that would allow other countries to establish their own military bases in the Philippines.
He slammed the Aquino administration for bringing the dispute with China in the South China Sea to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, saying it would give the United States the leverage to continue "its provocative patrol in the South China Sea."
Kapunan pointed out that the defense pact has been unduly stretched by the United States to allow it to conduct regular naval patrol and reconnaissance f.
