Sandberg benched slumping slugger Ryan Howard for the third straight day in favour of Darin Ruf, who went 1 for 2 with an RBI. "He swung the bat aggressively, had some good at-bats," Sandberg said. The manager was noncommittal on whether Howard would return to the lineup Saturday. Miley won his previous three outings while striking out 19 in 20 2-3 innings with a 1.74 ERA. But he was off from the jump against the Phillies, and the five earned runs were the second-most hes allowed in a start this season. "He wasnt very good," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "He didnt have a good feel with his pitches." The left-hander laboured through the first inning when Philadelphia sent eight batters to the plate while taking a 2-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk to Carlos Ruiz and Browns groundout. It was 3-0 after the second thanks to Chase Utleys RBI single, and Philadelphia tacked on two more in the third on Rufs sacrifice fly and Cody Asches RBI single. "The game kind of got away in the third inning," Miley said. "That was on me." The Phillies looked in complete control when Ruf doubled and scored in the fifth. But Sandberg elected to lift Kendrick with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, and it backfired. Marte cleared the wall in left, his first homer in 68 career at-bats, against left-hander Antonio Bastardo to make it 6-4. "I wasnt looking to hit a homer, (but) it was a really good feeling for me," Marte said through a translator. "Im really happy just to get the opportunity." Bastardo came back out for the seventh but was lifted after consecutive singles with none out. White is eager to play Sunday when the Falcons (2-5) visit Carolina (4-3). The ninth-year veteran returned to practice Friday for the first time in over three weeks and is listed as questionable. "It went well," he said. "I ran some routes and did some things that are in the game plan. I felt real good out there." White played the first five games with a high ankle sprain, but had just 14 catches for 129 yards and no touchdowns -- far below the weekly statistics he accustomed to posting as the Falcons career-leading receiver.
